Spray Foam Roofing Patches Up Superdome After Katrina Hurricane Katrina ripped two 75-square-foot holes in the roof of the 70,000-seat Louisiana Superdome when the storm struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005. Wind and water damage caused about 70 percent of the roof to fail before a temporary roof could be installed. Replacing the roof meant undertaking what is believed to be the biggest reroofing project ever attempted in the United States. The largest domed structure in the world, the Superdome had 9.7 acres of metal roof decking, with a multitude of irregular shapes and penetrations. The new roof would need to withstand the force of future hurricanes and be installed quickly — the home opener for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints was slated for Sept. 25, 2006. The new roof was constructed using a rigid, closed-cell polyurethane spray foam insulation formulated with Honeywell Enovate blowing agent, a non-ozone-depleting hydrofluorocarbon. Spray foam systems offer dimensional stability and compression strength along with a track record of excellent performance in hurricanes. The systems are lightweight and fully adhesive, attaching easily to all types of decks and substrates. The new roof on the Superdome is guaranteed by the system manufacturer, BaySystems North America, to resist hurricane-force winds. Replacing about 2,000 square feet of roofing per day, the installation crews finished the job nearly two full months ahead of schedule. HONEYWELL SPECIALTY

Access Control System Integral to 24/7 Office Security One of the challenges of centralizing Price-WaterhouseCoopers’ Zurich, Switzerland, offices was implementing a security system that went beyond traditional access control requirements. Staff work irregular hours and must have access to their workplace 24/7 without lengthy security controls and laborious identity checks. The highly confidential nature of the firm’s work, along with its use of a sophisticated hotelling arrangement, imposed additional requirements on the security system. PriceWaterhouseCoopers selected LEGIC’s contactless, all-on-one-card technology for multifunctional access control and employee personal identification. Up to 127 applications and biometrics can be programmed onto a single card. During normal office hours, employees identify themselves at the various entrances using their smart cards, which also open elevator doors and the entrance doors to the various floors. For heightened security after normal business hours, one entrance is equipped with a biometric fingerprint reader, part of same access control system. Because numerous PriceWaterhouseCoopers employees work at client premises, the new office was designed with only 1,064 workstations for more than 1,200 employees. One hundred of those workstations are booked by rotating employees using a hotelling system: Staff members who need to work in Zurich for a short time identify themselves at the entrance using their smart cards, then use the same cards to book desks at hotelling consoles in the foyer. The smart cards are also integrated with an innovative office automation concept referred to as the “Follow&Secure” system: 60 multifunctional machines that are accessible to everyone on every floor for printing, scanning, copying and faxing. Print jobs are queued from any workstation and are activated at the multipurpose device with the same smart card for document security and privacy. LEGIC Identsystems

Hotel uses controls to Offer Guests 5-Star Lighting The Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City is designed to offer guests a memorable hotel experience. The goal for the lighting design was to use the hotel’s exposure to abundant natural light to its best effect and create interior environments that would complement the cityscape. Lighting control was a complex challenge. The hotel wanted a centralized system that could handle all of its public spaces, from a ballroom to a lobby lounge, from a fitness center to restaurants. To handle those diverse spaces, the hotel chose a Lutron lighting control system. Within each space, daylight sensors adjust lighting levels in response to available natural light. This daylight harvesting keeps guests comfortable and light levels consistent while reducing energy use. The system is managed through a central processor, with multiple dimming and switching panels for manual override. Lighting control in the main ballroom posed a special challenge. While the design for most of the hotel’s public spaces is fixed, the main ballroom is configurable for a wide variety of events, including weddings, fashion shows and corporate parties. The lighting system in the ballroom contains presets appropriate for the most common room configurations and uses. Manual adjustments are possible from various control points throughout the ballroom. The high-end hotel even provides sophisticated lighting control in its newest guest suite, the Taipan. Guests control lighting, as well as Roman shades and draperies on the suite’s floor-to-ceiling windows, using a PC-based interface in the suite’s radio frequency-based remote control. For guests who visit multiple times, a customized lighting profile is stored. When the guest returns, the custom lighting configuration used on the last visit will be in operation in the suite. Johnsonite Circulinity textured rubber tile component system consists of five different but coordinated patterns that can be combined to create special effects using the light refraction of each pattern. Tiles are 24-by-24-inches and are available in more than 70 standard colors. Product coordinates with company’s matching stair treads, transitions, wall base and corner guards. Stonhard Stonblend RTZ rubber aggregate chip-infused urethane flooring is designed for health care environments. The product absorbs sound and provides a cushioned walking surface. Available in a wide color palette and custom colors, the product requires no waxing, stripping or buffing. Product is 3/16-inch thick. Forbo Marmoleum linoleum flooring features three organic patterns inspired by nature. Product comes with Topshield, a two-layer water-based wear layer which offers dirt and scuff protection, design sharpness and a matte finish. Topshield provides scorch and spill resistance and guards against color fading, according to the company. Made from all natural and renewable raw materials. Roppe The SafeTcork line of rubber and vinyl tile contains cork content that improves slip-resistance and can be used in high-traffic areas where moisture on the floor is a concern. The marbleized product can be customized by choosing from nine chip colors which are added to a white base. Features anti-microbial agents to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. Seams can be heat welded. LG Floors Deco Wood luxury vinyl tile offers wood grain patterns in a contemporary color palette inspired by towns in southwest England. Recent additions include four end-grain wood patterns available in 18-by-18-inch tiles and two new wood plank designs with the modern look of bamboo available in three widths. Product has wear layer of either .5 mm or .7 mm and two different surface textures. Armstrong Royal homogeneous vinyl sheet features a UV-cured urethane coating designed to reduce routine maintenance. The line features 16 colors intended for health care settings in a marbleized pattern. Matching solid weld rods as well as S-761 seam adhesive, an alternative to heat welding, are available for installation. Meets ASTM F1913. Freudenberg Building Systems noraplan environcare rubber floor covering is available in 48 nature-inspired colors with subtle harmonies and accents. Designed with input from health care companies, the product features slip resistance characteristics that comply with ASTM D 2047 guidelines. Floor covering doesn’t require waxing or sealing and is Greenguard indoor air quality-certified. Lees Carpets NeoFloor is a hybrid floor covering made of a waterproof vinyl and fiberglass backing with straight-standing nylon fibers and wear layer. Product has 10 times more fibers than carpet, according to the company. Product can be cleaned with an upright vacuum or with machines used on smooth or textile floors for wet cleaning.
